I’ve seen a lot of moon nail photos on the net, but I hadn’t tried them until a tutorial with paper hole reinforcement stickers inspired me. My first moon nails adventure lasted two days!
What you need for Moon Nails:
- a base coat
- a light nail polish as your base colour
- a darker nail polish
- a top coat
- French guides
How do you feel when you realise you don’t have everything you need? That happened to me when I picked all the items I needed. I couldn’t find any hole reinforcement stickers in any store in town, but I noticed that French guides can be perfect for this task. One problem solved!
I wanted to use a creamy colour as my light base, but I used a cheerful cotton candy pink for a sweet touch instead (Cotton Candy, Avon). I applied two coats, I stuck the guides on the back of my hands to lose some of the adhesive, and applied them on the base of each nail by pressing well.

I used Nailene’s Perfect Tips and Toes. The package contains three sheets with guides for nails and toes, for a total of 96 guides. I don’t like toes with French pedicure, so I’ll use the latter for other manicure ideas.
After the guides, I applied two coats of Cherry Jubilee (Avon), a shiny sour cherry shade. I waited until each coat was fully dry.
My first day of experiment finished on a sad note: my sister knocked at the door, I pulled the guides too soon, and I started cooking… I ruined a big part of my freshly polished nails!
The day after, I continued the experiment on a Nailene false nail. I decided to use Sheer Pale Pink, a light cream with a hint of pink. I applied three coats to cover the nail, then I waited. I applied the guide; painted the rest of the nail with two coats of Cherry Jubilee, and finished with a coat of clear nail lacquer. This clear coat uniformed these different textures and made my manicure extra glossy!
I think I’ve found two perfect colours. I look forward to trying the moon nails again. I think I will snap more photos and write an illustrated step-by-step instruction on the blog.
Things you need to check before attempting any manicure
- I don’t have to be in a hurry
- It’s better to try a new manicure on a false nail before
- Some tools can be used for other useful purposes (guides, false nails…)
- It’s better to be sure that your sister (or whoever lives with you) has the house keys. ;-D
