In the UK, I stumbled upon some new beauty standards; one of these being the blackest black, bold false eyelashes, seen 24/7 on the street. Lash extensions or glue-on, their type doesn’t really matter. So I embraced this trend on a whim with some magnetic lashes!
And on a whim, I want to discuss magnetic lashes and magnetic eyeliners: are they worth, easy to use, safe? Better than the drugstore eyelashes?
The great advantage of using magnetic lashes is no need for glue. These falsies adhere to your delicate skin via magnetism! The magnetic bond is that between the magnets on the lash strips and the microbeads in the eyeliner formula. We can skip the glue, its stickiness and unpredictable hold power, but are we sure magnetic lashes are the answer? I tried a pair of magnetic falsies to know more…
XXX magnetic eyeliner and eyelashes: product & packaging
XXX is not a brand, you won’t find XXX eyelash kit online. XXX stands for an unbranded or hard-to-pronounce beauty company. I found this XXX kit on Amazon at a reasonable price (from £5 up); the links and banners will help you to see this model or similar alternatives. This kit looks rather basic and anonymous but has a stylish rose gold twist. The featured set contains the essential for a correct application: a compact case with a pair of criss-cross magnetic lashes, a 15ml tube of magnetic eyeliner in black and an applicator. The applicator has a flat and wide tip and is shaped like ergonomic tweezers.
Formula & other specifications
These particular eyelashes are a criss-cross type which gives volume, intensity and structure to your natural lashes. The eyelashes protective case has a sturdy closure and turns into a mirror when it’s time to discard the lashes. The eyeliner formula looks like any other liquid liner, but contains magnetic microbeads (it’s FDA approved). Due to these particles, the eyeliner must be shaken well before the use, so to ensure their even distribution. The formula glides smoothly, and it’s formulated to be long-lasting and waterproof but still easy to remove. I tested it, and I confirm it’s smudge-proof but not 100% waterproof. I could also spot a light fragrance in it that doesn’t bother me and can’t be really felt.
How to use:
From the makeup to the application of these magnetic lashes, there are no extra steps:
- Complete your makeup and curl your lashes.
- Shake your magnetic eyeliner vigorously.
- Outline your eyelash line, ensuring there are no gaps between your natural lashes.
- Wait for it to dry and reapply if needed.
- Remove your lashes and continue with the usual steps (bending/rolling; measuring and eventually cutting them to size).
- Apply your magnetic lashes steadily with the applicator, starting from a corner, and put them in place.
The magnetic grip is instant, but I could still replace the lashes to fit them better. At this crucial point, I experience an adverse fact: when I lift my lashes to readjust them, the eyeliner tends to crumble after a couple of attempts. The eyeliner doesn’t fall off but – for a simple matter of physics – it stays onto the magnetic bands. A predictable issue, I sorted it in this way: I layered a regular black eyeliner and the magnetic liner to avoid gaps. I reapplied the magnetic liner if missing. I added a touch of metallic green eyeshadow to divert the attention…
PROS
- convenient kit
- easy to use
- no glue (latex-free)
- no stickiness
- less (feeling of) weight
- durable eyelashes
- reusable pieces (compact case with mirror and applicator).
CONS
- the eyeliner isn’t waterproof
- it crumbles.
Let’s talk about them, are they worth it?
These magnetic eyelashes are probably the funniest and tidiest experience I could ever have with some falsies! Once on, these lashes don’t feel stuck and caked to the skin. Of course, the magnetic tightness is not perfect but comparably better than regular glue, which loses grip with body warmth, sweat and the hours. I felt more confident, thanks to the simple fact that my lashes weren’t going to fall in the next blink; still, I’m concerned about the extra metals contained in this type of liquid eyeliner.
However, the many advantages are quite evident, such as a considerably lower cost. Consider the time and money spent on an average pro eyelash extension session (more than £30 for no-express lashes*), or the little pounds spent on glue and cheap lashes for frequent usage. The easiness, the cleanness and the comfort of wearing and using these magnetic lashes win my perplexity and fed my curiosity. It’s the ad butterfly effect I’ve been dreaming of for ages…
