Metagenics Ketogenic Shake (Vanilla) – review + what’s a keto diet?

Shakes, meal replacements and I: there was a time when I was cycling every day like a little devil to work and back home late. I relied on shakes and, of the many, Metagenics Ketogenic Shake is my first taste – or sip – of a keto diet.

Metagenics Ketogenic Shake review and about keto diet

If you have no time to cook a substantial meal or have no time at all but still want to eat something nutritious and “still real”, you may need a shaker and a meal replacement powder…

Metagenics Ketogenic Shake: product and package

Metagenics Ketogenic Shake (Vanilla) is a meal replacement specific for keto diets. This shake can substitute either your lunch or dinner, and it can also work as a pre or post-workout shake. It comes in a 700-gr resealable bag, for a total of 14 servings, and is available in two natural flavours, chocolate and vanilla.

But, first of all, what’s a keto diet?

A ketogenic diet – generally known as keto diet – is a dietary program originally developed for people (particularly children) suffering from epilepsy, and it came back to popularity in the 2000s. The keto diet is based on the consume of a higher amount of fats, followed by proteins. Carbohydrate intake is kept low to push the body to consume fats instead of carbs to get energy. This metabolic mood is called ketosis from the ketones, elements created while burning fats. There are different types of keto diets, depending on the proportion of the dietary groups. Studies show that a keto diet can lower down blood and insulin level, and promote weight loss. *

Formula
This is a keto meal, so expect a higher dose of (good) fats and proteins, and the lowest amount possible of carbohydrate. This replacement provides 20 grams of fats, 5 grams medium-chain triglycerides and 17 grams of proteins, for a total of 280 Kcalories per shake. It contains high oleic sunflower oil powder and whey isolate protein boosted with 25 vitamins and minerals with a vanilla natural flavouring. It’s gluten-free and free from GMOs, colourants and preservatives.

Texture and taste
Metagenics Ketogenic Shake is a super thin, volatile white powder which mixes smoothly and effortlessly into an airy milkshake-alike drink! As a powder, its odour is vague (milky) but, once mixed, the vanilla flavour shows itself. Compared to other vanilla-flavoured healthy snacks and meal replacements, this Metagenics shake has the most subtle and less sweet found so far. The taste is very delicate and reminds of milk toffees, instead. No unpleasant aftertaste found.

If you are looking for a very sweet vanilla taste like a guilty-free treat, you may ask for more sweetness. Having this Ketogenic Shake as your meal is like drinking a milkshake and gives the same bubbly sensation. I’ve been surprised. I usually need a good 5 minutes to tell my brain I am actually full after a shake made with water. My brain thinks I’m clearly lying. This shake seems to activate something; I feel my stomach full, and my brain just asks for some fruit (which is the end of my usual meals). I can’t eat anything else without feeling full to bursting point.

Keto diet meal replacement, natural vanilla shake

Metagenics Ketogenic Shake is available online at DRVitaminSolution for a regular price of $56 circa, hence it falls into a medium to high range. It would be high for me, but it’s a medical-grade product with high-quality ingredients, this explains the price.

Metagenics Ketogenic Shake meal replacement review by Valentina Chirico

From my experience, a shake is a more controlled alternative to commercial bars and snacks. Just read a protein snack label, and you’ll understand. In fact, in this shake, there are no artificial ingredients nor extra sugars which will make you crave for more. I am not into keto, but just curious to find my balance. If I was, I would repurchase this ketogenic alternative. The Metagenics Ketogenic Shake is a filling and nutritious solution and, in my humble opinion, it has that texture all dietary shakes should have: smooth like a shake, indeed!
