That’s my lucky case, but I tried Nioxin 3-Part System No3 kit for my colour hair…

Nioxin 3-Part System kits: the system

Nioxin 3-Part System is a tri-phase professional treatment for hair loss. There’s a total of six kits studied for two stages of thinning – light and progressive – and three types of hair (normal, coloured and bleached). Every box contains a shampoo, a scalp conditioner and a scalp & hair treatment. The aims are cleansing the scalp, fortifying and thickening the hair, hydrating.

Nioxin 3-Part System kit No3 is specifically formulated for coloured hair experiencing light signs of thinning. This system is colour safe, and its three products act in combination on both hair and scalp to purify pores from extra sebum and pollutants; boost hair volume; increase and balance hydration levels, while preventing hair colour to fading. In this kit, there are a cleanser shampoo, a scalp therapy revitalising conditioner and a leave-in treatment.

You can’t start any treatment with dirty hair! The first step of the Nioxin 3D care system is a cleanser shampoo. This shampoo comes in a 150ml sleek tube with a press-on cap and works like any other foaming shampoo. It’s made to cleanse your scalp thoroughly but without washing off your hair colour; it could be used daily, technically. Your head feels fresh and ready to receive the following moisturising treatment; while your hair colour is safe too!

Formula 
Nioxin 3-Part System Cleanser Shampoo formula has a fresh trio: methol, mentha piperita oil and mint leaf oil with niacinamide and panthenol.

Texture & scent
You can feel and see a blasting effect! This shampoo is a gel product with a minty – aqua green hue; its scent is refreshing as its colour inspires freshness too. Indeed, it smells of menthol like artic mint candies!

Following, the second step in Nioxin 3-Part System kit is a moisturising conditioner. This comes in a similar 150ml sleek bottle with a press-on cap.

Formula
The Scalp Therapy Conditioner isn’t like a usual hydrating conditioner and mirrors some ingredients found earlier in the shampoo (mentha piperita oil, mint leaf oil, menthol, panthenol and niacinamide). It does more: it hydrates intensely; strengthens your hair to fight breakage and hair loss; boosts the diameter of each hair strand for fuller-looking hair.

Texture & scent
This conditioner is a thick cream that spreads nicely onto your hair. Its formulation feels very light so it can be massaged onto the scalp and let it rest for the required time (1-3 minutes); it’s made for that. Its scent is extremely refreshing on the skin and nose with its dominant spearmint note and tingling sensation.

The last step is the Scalp & Hair treatment, a revitalising and volumising leave-in product. This treatment can be used daily and comes in a 50ml bottle with tube applicator and protective cap.

Formula
Its formula is lightweight and enriched with peppermint oil to refresh the scalp. It contains antioxidants and botanical extracts (i.e. fennel, blueberries, lemon peel, sugar cane) and uses its Transactive Delivery System 2.0 technology to work towards fuller and thicker hair. This pocket treatment should also protect from breakage and give extra shine. It has plenty of caffeine to energise your scalp and follicles as one of the top ingredients.

Texture & scent
The Scalp & Hair Leave-in Treatment is a fluid gel. It needs to be shaken, before being applied to damp scalp and hair and massaged onto the scalp. Its minty fragrance is quite weak, less enjoyable and refreshing compared to the Diaboost treatment. Both have the same fluid consistency and applicator.

Let’s get the (Nioxin) 30 Days Challenge started!

I followed Nioxin 30 days challenge and put the 3-Part System kit to the test for one month. My main concerns were hair loss and hair colour protection. Before this test, I was losing locks of hair at every shampoo, and I was keeping my henna colour vivid with a botanical-based shampoo for coloured and treated hair. 

The very first application saw me amused by textures and scents, and also by the effect of these three products on my full head. In fact, shampoo and conditioner gave me by far the best sensory experience in this kit; the first result was instant. My head felt very clean and instantly refreshed, the conditioner boosts this pure sensation. My hair was super light, smooth and full of volume. 

Even if the shampoo made my hair feel dry at first, the conditioner re-balanced the situation under the shower. The third step gave instant volume outside the shower box. Unfortunately, my mane was slightly unruly as the kit didn’t seem to control humidity and consequent frizziness. But the next day, I woke up with the same volume and lightness as I felt the day before. 

Halfway through the challenge, I truly enjoyed the iciness of the Scalp Therapy Conditioner… I couldn’t wait to use it every time I had a shower! My hair was super light and voluminous with a lively colour!

After 30 days, I was very happy with the result: light but full-bodied locks and less hair in the sink. Hair volume was instant, and I could feel it after shampooing (see here for the tutorial) and after applying the Scalp&Hair Leave-in Treatment. Hair was soft, and my henna colour was vivid and vibrant.

Downsides? Maybe two: the Nioxin 3-Part System is very effective in purifying, strengthening and volumising the hair but it doesn’t help to control frizziness. You don’t need to wait too much for some good effects to come: cleanliness, lightness and volume from the first shampoo. Resilience to stressful factors is real, but hair keeps suffer from humidity and electrostatic effect.

The Scalp & Hair Leave-in Treatment, which is the last step of the system so the one you will feel the most, isn’t the most pleasant product for texture and scent. It volumises but doesn’t refresh as the Nioxin 3D Intensive Diaboost does. Plus, due to its texture, I avoided applying to my hair as it might feel sticky without giving the light so much promised. I often switched to the Diaboost (review) that can actually be integrated with these 3D care systems.

The Nioxin 3-Part System kit No3 for coloured hair is available in a variety of online stores, such as the Amazon official Nioxin page and other online retailers (lookfantastic, feelunique…) at a varying price around £32 per box with each piece sold individually in different sizes as well.

Nioxin proved to be as professional as kind to both skin and hair. It took care of my coloured hair at 360° and acted surprisingly fast with long-lasting effects. The three steps are easy to use and fit in any quick hair routine. Busy lifestyle? The kit – shampoo and conditioner – does also destress and energise at once with that pleasant icy, minty fragrance!
