May this evil eye protect you! Wolf & Gypsy and the power of sustainable jewellery

In many past and present cultures, wearing talismans is a powerful tool to ward off obscure presences creeping around daily existence. Of that heritage, Wolf & Gypsy jewellery keeps that particular mixture of nomadic, exotic, and mystic feel…

Wolf & Gypsy, female founded brand and layerable boho necklaces

Boho-chic recalls summer, sunshine, happiness and festivals; it will hardly go out of fashion. Wolf & Gypsy encapsulates all these positive feelings in its sustainable collections that taste both modern and antique…

Wolf & Gypsy: the brand

The wolf and the gipsy have a kind of energy that’s hard to restrain and unique to certain people. For these free spirits, Wolf & Gypsy creates jewels with an ancestral connection with the natural elements. This indie label finds a balance between bohemian style – with charms, dainty gemstones and rich symbolism – and minimal chic silhouettes of smooth lines and curves of ear hoops and bangles.

Note: Wolf & Gypsy has a new face and name: welcome to Wolf & Zephyr. More news soon.

Evil Eye Protection Necklace and eco-friendly packaging

Every and each Wolf & Gypsy piece has these two signature features:

  • customisation and layer-ability. You can select the length and metal for your necklace and play with your jewellery by combining textures and thickness;
  • sustainability. You’re sure your next jewel is made with the finest materials, recycled precious metals – gold and silver – and conflict-free, ecologically sourced gemstones.

Wolf & Gypsy eco-consciousness goes beyond the production and involves no-profit funding – with 1% of its annual sales donated to 1% For the Planet – and old jewels refurbishment.

Products & Packaging
Rings, bracelets, necklaces, chokers and earrings… The e-catalogue invites you to mix and match and stack your favourites styles. The ear curation section is particularly rich with many ear lobe and auricle solutions, with or without piercing! The same attention to the raw material is applied to the packaging. Every piece in this collection comes in a recycled cardboard box with padded inside, and a recycled-paper ‘thank you’ card made like a tarot. These jewellery aren’t flimsy and not even their boxes are, they’re made for lasting memories.

The evil eye, precious protection…
This evil eye necklace is a rich twist on this popular theme. The ever-watching blue eye – you can see everywhere in Greece and Turkey – is turned into an eye in relief over an indenting gold medallion. The evil eye is a bad energy someone puts upon you, but the evil eye – when worn or carried with you – becomes a source of protection. In southern Italy, we have a similar concept: envy is the ‘hidden’ danger from the outside world and it’s called ‘bad eye’. Hopefully, gestures and incantations or lucky charms are used to turn it away.

Who’s behind Wolf & Gypsy
Launched in 2018, Wolf & Gypsy comes from Tori Shay’s research for some personal jewellery that was both appealing, high-quality and sustainable. Tori deiced to put her hand at work for herself and to energise people with the power of amulets and gemstones, make them feel good with a great design and products with a lower environmental impact. Tori designs her creations in the UK, selects raw materials in India and entrusts small businesses to complete the process. Her materialisations are playful, essential, rich, bold, young and mature at the same time, a wearable oxymoron that many women can make their own. Her style is free as the name meant it: the wolf – the name of his son Rafe – the gipsy, the unstoppable traveller, Tori.

Remember boho has been rocking the socials since the late 2000s and you may see similar keepsakes and boho jewellery online but the question, my question is: are they really that shiny and well made as they look in pictures? Is my ‘evil eye’ really blinking?

Wolf & Gypsy Evil Eye Protection Necklace: the design and how to wear it
This evil eye necklace (£145 or 3 £48.33 instalments) is an intricate piece suspended on a thin chain. As many necklaces available on the website, the base metal and the length are customisable (16”, 18”, 20” and 22”). This version is in gold vermeil and six white topaz stones dotting the base coin in interesting contrast with the warmth of the metal, hence radiating a lively shine.

This evil eye can be worn alone and feels complete on its own because the many details in this pendant naturally attract your attention. It will stand up on any dark outfit but daily and casual looks are a winning, effortless match. It can be accompanied by a choker and a longer necklace. For the longer piece in this game of layers, I would personally pick another coin-style/round pendant or a necklace with a short vertical applique (i.e. wishbone). The Wolf & Gypsy team recommends pairing the evil eye with one of their element necklaces that are similar in proportion and custom options.

STYLE TIP!
There’s always an occasion to dress up; at least, I find so. You can turn this evil eye necklace into a hairpiece! Secure both ends of the necklace with some bobby pins on the back of your head and hide a portion of the chain behind some locks. Align the pendant on your forehead and the gipsy look is done in no time. You can style your hair in texturised curls or braids over back-combed hair.

You may believe in the evil eye, in fortune and back luck or you may not. That’s simple. I did try to step away from my customs, but I brought with me the fear someone could put an evil eye on me while minding my own business. A little lucky charm never hurts and looks even good! Here’s a free tip: disguise an amulet between your necklace layers, you’ll be protected and your style unique…
