Rovectin Aqua Soothing UV Protector mineral sunscreen – review

Sunny days invite you to bask in the sun but before you step outside, take your sunscreen. Here’s a mineral choice, Rovectin Aqua Soothing UV Protector.

Sun protection with mineral sunscreens

Being too sensitive for regular sunscreens doesn’t mean you can skip it. Rovectin had you in mind with its Aqua Soothing UV Protector…

Rovectin Aqua Soothing UV Protector: product and packaging

Aqua Soothing UV Protector is a mineral sunscreen providing you SPF 50+ and PA++++ (extremely high protection against UVA) for the face, and it’s suitable for the body. It comes in a minimal flat tube with a twist-off cap for a total of 50 ml of protection.

Formula

Rovectin’s new face SPF 50+ is a 100% mineral filter that employs mineral powders rather than chemicals to protect your skin from both UVA and UVB rays. In Rovectin Aqua Soothing UV Protector, there are two mineral ingredients that work like a shield: titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. The mineral formula is further enriched with coconut oil, Centella Asiatica extracts, bitter almond and sunflower oils, Vitamin E and more…

Mineral vs Chemical sunscreens: spot the difference

A sunscreen must be an essential component of your summer bag, whether you’re heading toward your holiday destination or just going out for some errands. Yet, not all sunscreens are the same or even work the same. The family split in half: mineral filters and chemical sunscreens.

Chemical sunscreens are undoubtedly the most common, they allow UV rays to “hit” the skin but they convert them into “heat” via a chemical reaction before the UVs could cause any damage. To do so, chemical sun creams use photosensitive ingredients like oxybenzone, avobenzone, octisalate, octocrylene, homosalate, and octinoxate. On the other hand, mineral sunscreens literally block UVs and prevent them to reach the skin thanks to the above-mentioned minerals – zinc oxide and titanium dioxide.

Chemical or mineral sunscreen differences

Mineral vs Chemical sunscreens: which one is better?

Nice question, but it all comes to you, your skin type and your taste. Chemical sun creams can cause sensitivity in small percentages or worse some skin conditions due to the heat they produce. They need to be applied in advance, usually 15 to 30 minutes before sunbathing or being outside in the sun. Mineral sunscreens are suitable for sensitive and child skin and work straight away. However, they are harder to spread, need reapplications, and leave a white cast due to the protective mineral layer they create. Their formula may also be felt heavier on some skin.
It’s all up to you as long as you are protected.

Texture and scent

The long educational introduction will help you understand this product more because it isn’t like those sun creams you’ll reach for on the shelves. Rovectin Aqua Soothing UV Protector is a white dense lotion with a neutral odour and an unidentifiable olfactory note. Sometimes, after hours, I can feel a “ferrous” note but it’s still something vague and very hard to describe.

PROS:

  • it’s for all skin types,
  • hypoallergenic and tested,
  • has a delicate formula (no irritation, no redness),
  • provides SPF 50+,
  • rated PA++++ (extremely high against UVA),
  • contains no alcohol, artificial fragrance or colourants,
  • effectively protects from the sun (no red patches, no uneven tone),
  • works as soon as it’s on the skin,
  • suitable also for other body parts.

CONS:

  • you need to work it more to spread it well,
  • leaves a white cast,
  • might enhance fine lines.

Rovectin Aqua Soothing UV Protector SPF 50+ ($29) is advertised as a sunscreen for oily and combination skin; a product that can conclude your daytime skincare routine and can be applied wherever needed. The website states as well that it hydrates and contributes to brightening the skin and improving the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. As a person with combination skin who sits in front of a window (with a nice view and loads of sun) to work, I jumped forward to try it as much as possible and get the most out of it.

A nice discovery: Rovectin Aqua Soothing UV Protector is my very first mineral sunscreen and I was eager to get familiar with this type of product.

Rovectin Aqua Soothing UV Protector review

As I approached Rovectin’s, my main concern was that unpopular feature that pushes many people away from mineral sun creams: the “feared” white cast. It’s true and it’s visible: this sunscreen whitens my skin and it’s certainly something I don’t like if I’m going out. As I foresaw, its formula needs some extra work to be even on the skin, and I can see it can sit into fine lines around my eye area as I try to protect it with the same product if I can. It also tends to dry up areas that are between my dry and oily areas (around my chin).

Apart from that, I thought Rovectin mineral filter was going to feel much heavier! Instead, I had the impression my skin adjusted to it and I forgot I was using it. This was such a nice surprise. The protection is real: my skin is protected from direct sun and sun rays reflected through my window. I got an even tan without any irritations or redness.

The description of a typical mineral sunscreen fits perfectly with Rovectin Aqua Soothing UV Protector. I knew what I was going to spread onto my skin. I’m sure this would be a perfect match for sensitive skin.

I’m a lazy git and I like skincare products that apply easily, especially on a rushed morning. If only Rovectin Aqua Soothing UV Protector had dear, Klairs Soft Airy UV Essence texture, I would be happier. That was my dream sun cream. For now, I’m happy with the level of protection and I assure you it works even better on other areas exposed to the sun. This means more tan, safe tan for me!
