Keratin Treatments And Hair Colouring, The Expert Says…

With the spread of at-home keratin treatments, keratin hair-strengthening products are experiencing stellar popularity but what happens when your hair needs a punch of colour as well?

Eliza Pineda, in-house expert at Mayraki Professional, shares her tips on using keratin treatments and hair colouring systems to get the best of both at home.

How Keratin Treatments Work?

Keratin treatments, popularly known as Brazilian keratin treatment, are professional services targeting keratin, a key protein our bodies produce and found in hair, skin and nails. These treatments aim to change the form of these building blocks stored in our hair’s cortex by combining chemical processes and heat. The results are smoother, frizz-free strands, extra shine, increased manageability and less breakage.

Curly and wavy hair turns into shiny straight locks for months, which explains the popularity of these treatments. Once the prerogative of professional hairstylists, today keratin treatments are within the reach of everyone thanks to kits that are proven to be safe for home usage.

If keratin-based products have such an intensive effect on every single strand, what happens when your hair needs an equally transformative treatment like permanent hair colouring?

Keratin and hair Coloring Q&A With Hair Expert Eliza Pineda

After using Mayraki Professional Keratin System, I got in touch with Eliza Pineda, the brand’s in-house expert, who replied to core questions regarding keratin treatments and hair colour to understand better how these two processes may interact and which one to perform first to get healthy and smoother hair and added fresh colour.

I’d love to get rid of frizziness and change my hair colour. Are there any known interactions between keratin treatments like Mayraki Professional Keratin Instant Smoother System and hair dyes or colouring masks?

“We advise colouring hair before using the Keratin System for optimum results. When colouring hair it can receive damage, and using the Keratin System will help repair and strengthen the cuticle.”

[…] do a colour treatment before (Keratin System) because hair is more porous. This also means that you can seal the colour in with the Keratin System and repair any damage done. There are no adverse effects whatsoever on coloured hair; no bleeding, fading, or otherwise.
Semi-permanent colours, hair masks, and conditioners are okay since these products deposit colour on top of the hair shaft.”

What if I dye my hair too soon after a hair-strengthening session?

“Colouring soon after using the Keratin System with a permanent dye may cause the colour to not absorb fully and penetrate the shaft which is how it deposits colour. This may result in some patchiness.”

About covering natural growth and refreshing hair colour, how long after a keratin session is recommended to colour one’s hair again?

“I recommend colouring hair two weeks after doing the keratin treatment. It will give the hair time to absorb the keratin and the colour will adhere better.”

Keratin treatments and hair colouring don’t necessarily fight each other. When done carefully and in the right order their combined results will last longer for the overall health of your hair. You can have your dream hair colour before and let keratin make its magic and add extra shine to your coloured hair.

Special thanks to the Mayraki PR team for their support and Eliza Pineda for her invaluable contribution.
