How to Style Your Home to Make It Feel More like You

If your home doesn’t feel like the space you dream of, it can look rather confusing. But it’s your place, after all, and you can style your home the way you want.

When your nest doesn’t feel right, it’s time to change something. Here’s how to style your home so you can really feel at home!

When It’s Time to Redecorate Your Home but…

If you aren’t renting you have a lot of freedom… make use of it! You can make your home or apartment as you want but when you’re not sure about how to change the decor or what to incorporate, you can get a little frozen in place. Then, your house stays the same way and never starts to feel like the home you know it can be.

This can lead to a lot of frustration over the state of your home. It’s clean and tidy, of course, but it doesn’t look the way you like or function the way you want. It might not even feel like it’s not even your space. That’s why this article is for you. Transforming your home in a positive way can be a game changer, and these tips can surely help you take the first steps toward your dream home.

A Matter of Style: You Don’t Have to Be Minimalist!

Minimalism is all the rage these days: clear spaces, subtle colours, nothing on the floor. There are many positive aspects of decorating in this style but it isn’t for everyone. If you don’t like the negative space that this decor style brings with it, don’t feel obliged to choose the minimalism.

Don’t let decor magazines and interior designers trick you into thinking that a minimalist style is the best thing for your home. It’s easy to feel a bit pressured, seeing as this advice is everywhere, but there are other types of interior decor out there. The best part is that you can mix and match elements of different styles as well.

Think: “What Makes You Feel Cosy?”

Being cosy at home is the base goal of all interior decor. If you want the space to feel like it’s your own, and you’re happy to be there at any and all times, you’re going to need to evoke that cosy feeling for yourself. So, what kind of things make you feel chilled? Figuring this out will make sure your rooms look and feel just right.

Borrow some ideas from the homes of your friends and family here. If you go around a loved one’s house and you’re instantly at peace in their living room or kitchen, think about the elements that make you feel that way. Of course, a lot of it will be the fact that you’re spending time with someone you love, but those sofa cushions you’re relaxing into definitely help as well!

Paint Features You Wouldn’t Really Think About

It’s not just the walls of your home that you can paint. There are a lot of features you can paint to add a touch of personality that feels more like you. You just have to think a little unorthodox here.

To start with, the staircase in your home can be repainted to suit you. And it doesn’t just have to be coated in white gloss or varnished to look more like the natural wood. You can repaint it in any colour you really like, and even use adhesive wallpapers for a faux tile or wooden board look.

You can also apply a new coat of paint to your doors and windows. Again, in any colour you like – just be sure you buy a kind of paint that’s hardy and sticky enough for materials other than plaster or wood.

You can then turn your attention toward the ceilings of your rooms. These are the biggest features that often go unpainted in any house, but you don’t have to just put up with boring white or off-white. Stencil out a design if you like and go multicoloured!

Refit Your Bathroom

The bathroom should be a place you feel totally comfortable in. It should be a room that’s easy to keep clean and feels cosy enough to spend a good time in. Even if there are cold tiles on the floor and the vent fan is very noisy in the corner, it’s totally possible to achieve this feeling!

Start by refitting the bathroom. There are many different bathroom suites available on the market, and not every shower cabin, bath, and toilet needs to look the same. If you don’t like the way your bathroom features pop out, or they’re simply unfunctional in some way or another, invest in a new set and install them ASAP.

Once that’s been sorted, you can focus on the general bathroom design. It’s OK to rip off the wall tiles and replace them, but sometimes you just need to regrout and/or paint the existing ones. If you do the latter, you can even add your own unique, intricate designs, and that will make the room entirely your own.

You should also think about making the bathroom a little more softer. A rug on the floor can work, for example, but with a proper heated towel rail on the wall, as well as a table that fits into the corner with soft flannels and candles on it, the space will seem a lot cosier than ever before.

Pop a Skylight in the Bedroom

A bedroom skylight means you’ll get all the benefits of the sun first thing in the morning without any of the lack of privacy from keeping your curtains open. If your bedroom has a sloping portion or there is no attic above it, you can have a skylight fitted in the ceiling.

Skylights are also great for summer heat issues. You can ventilate your bedroom a lot more effectively when you add another point for the air to circulate.

Plus, with a skylight in the bedroom, you can even stare up at the sky in the middle of the night and watch the stars twinkle. If you’ve always loved being able to see the night sky and everything it has to offer, this will be the best addition you could ever make to your bedroom!

Your Garden: Your Private Place to Spend Quality Time

If there’s a garden outside the back of your house, make sure you turn it into a place where you can spend time without being bothered. Tall fencing, tall plants, a lot of shade, and even a closed-off patio area where you can sit with a good book or a podcast and enjoy the fresh air.

Garden spaces like this can do wonders for your perception. They’re super cosy and comfortable and keep the rest of the world out, but they also ensure you get your Vitamin D allocation and aren’t spending all your time indoors.

The more you curate your garden for this sense of privacy, the better. Maybe it’s time to get a summerhouse too? You can even hang up a hammock between trees if you fancy!

Spare Room? Convert it in Any Way You Like!

Spare rooms are usually converted with the idea that the new room is either going to offer more function, more value to the homeowner, or both. That’s why so many spare rooms are either used as offices or guest bedrooms – these are the kinds of rooms that feel sociable and practical.

You can use a spare room in other ways that feel more like you. If you have a spare room and you want it to be an art studio, a music production room, a place to do quiet yoga and meditation, or you want to set up a room for your pets so they have plenty of usable space for themselves, go ahead and convert that room for the purpose you’re dreaming of!

Let’s Make Your Home Feel Like the Perfect Place

If you want to transform your home into a space that feels authentically yours, these are the ways to go! The more your interior decor reflects the kind of person you are, the more comfortable you’re going to feel in the long run.

From your living to your garden, your bathroom and every other room in between, decorate in the way you like. Make it feel cosy specifically for you and incorporate the aesthetics you like, so your home feels like the perfect place to spend your time.
