In the morning, my brain doesn’t cope with basic life tasks without a shot of coffee. ‘My eyes may need some too!’, I thought while admiring my panda eyes in the mirror, so I wished dear, Klairs Fundamental Eye Awakening Gel could do something for them…
Gel textures usually evoke freshness and cleanness, this gel eye treatment by Korean brand dear, Klairs suggests the ‘awakening’ effect typical of many cool gels.
dear Klairs, Fundamental Eye Awakening Gel: product and packaging
The Fundamental Eye Awakening Gel is a day and night eye care treatment made by dear, Klairs to be used on its own or in combination with the Fundamental Nourishing Eye Butter (read the review here). Its package is touch-free: a tiny plastic bottle with a pump dispenser to dose its 35ml of eye gel. dear, Klairs speaks of quietness with its muted colour palette.
Formula
The key ingredients are caffeine and red beans extracts but, among the other ingredients, there are also Vitamin E and oligopeptides, argan and jojoba oils, mugwort and tea extracts complex. This concoction should refresh your eye area, lighten dark circles and puffiness, and revive with anti-oxidants.
Texture & scent
This is an almost perceptible greenish-grey, light gel. Its scent is equally undetectable, maybe fresh. Compared to the eye butter from the same brand, the texture is fresher; however, it isn’t that kind of ‘awakening’ cooling sensation that you might expect.
Once applied, it feels light and liquefies quickly, but it turns sticky while dabbing it…
How to use:
Morning and night on both under and upper eye area. It can be reapplied during the day to keep the skin moist, or topped with the Fundamental Nourishing Eye Butter.
PROS:
- it has a gentle formula (free form alcohol, silicones, artificial colourings and fragrances);
- it smoothes the under-eye area (visibly and to the touch);
- hydrates the skin;
- de-puffs the undereye area;
- it’s cruelty-free and vegan-friendly;
- travel-friendly;
- hygienic.
CONS:
- it feels sticky while getting absorbed;
- doesn’t depuff the upper-eye area (my case);
- doesn’t lighten heavy dark circles (my case).

To understand my review, I’d better state clearly what I look for in my eye care. My main concerns are dark circles – of many different shades, from red to violet passing fading into grey – and fine lines. My next eye cream should be smoothing and illuminating with comfort and hydration.
dear, Klairs Fundamental Eye Awakening Gel tried to wake up my sleepy eyes with a shy coolness; it’s more refreshing than the previously mentioned eye butter, so it felt acceptable. Apart from the temporary stickiness, this gel dries invisible and leaves my skin silky smooth to the touch and visibly hydrated. Fine lines are still visible when my facial expression changes, but an improvement can be appreciated.
This gel should de-puff the eye area and lighten up dark circles. Surprisingly, the Fundamental Nourishing Eye Butter did better at softening dark circles rather than this gel, but the gel depuffed my undereye better.
I stopped applying Klairs’ eye butter as I was looking for an effective blurring effect on my fine lines. I don’t like wasting any of my products, so I decided to top up the gel with the eye butter instead of reapplying the gel during the day. This combination seems tolerable and the butter sits well on the gel but I prefer to wait an hour or so before to apply it. The eye area keeps its smoothness during the day but dark circles don’t seem to improve. My dark circles are hard to tame.
Overall, this gel thicks some boxes in its goal list and it doesn’t disappoint in hydration, making it good for younger skin. That silky sensation comes as a surprise and I particularly like it. On a closer look, more mature or very dry skin will need extra care, while the cooling sensation is still waiting to strike.
In short, my eyes needs a double coffee shot!
